Recreational Vehicle Manufacturers and Cross-Border RVs

This page is about recreational vehicle manufacturers in North America. You can find information on motorhome manufacturers in Australia and New Zealand, and the UK and Europe on their own pages.

Motorised recreational vehicle and fifth wheel manufacturers in North America are large in number but how many are suitable for cross-border travel? Poor-road travel describes the usual driving conditions so this all but rules out the behemoths that are Class A motorhomes and RVs.

Even so, North American manufacturers have all the extremes of temperature and road conditions needed for extensive testing and it is there that we find the oldest and largest industry in the world. The Global Financial Crisis hit the industry hard in the late-2000s as an RV was generally seen to be non-essential expenditure. But this is now changing, some consolidation has occurred and the industry is picking up.

The choice of manufacturer is important for those of you considering cross-border travel. Once you have departed the country of origin, you’ll be needing an extensive, global service network for the motorhome, base vehicle and all components.

One consideration is to fly to your first destination and purchase your motorhome there. In our case, there seem to be some advantages to this strategy: no shipping costs, vehicles built in a left-hand-drive environment, an established network of owners and service centres. But to do so, you need to know who builds what, where. This page is an overview of the manufacturers and brands we’ve found. It is by no means exhaustive…

On other pages, we’ll address the distribution networks we’ve been able to uncover and show you which motorhomes and campervans are available in each country and their service networks.

Let’s start with the manufacturers themselves…
